For most of computing history, software was hand-built — artisanal, slow, expensive. Every business rewrote the same CRM, the same support desk, the same dashboards from scratch. Code was labour, billed by the hour.

History already ran this experiment, with coal. In 1865, people watched steam engines get more efficient and assumed coal demand would fall. The opposite happened: as each tonne did more useful work, coal became economical everywhere, so the world burned vastly more of it and the cost of energy per task collapsed. Efficiency didn't shrink demand — it exploded it, and drove cost through the floor. Infrastructure got cheap, so it got everywhere.
